The Gore Hill Fire Department is trained to respond to, and supress, vehicle fires. Firefighters use foam to extinguish the fire quickly, safely, and effectivly.
Vehicles present many different challenges to fire fighters. The components of the suspension system that make the car enjoyable to ride in can become projectiles when influenced by fire conditions. These hazards require firefighters to approach a vehicle fire with the same care as they would approach a structure fire.
Fire control is started from a safe distance to minimize the chance of injury to firefighters. Through the use of compressed air foam systems (CAFS), the fire is extinguished and any combustible surface is painted with a layer of foam that extinguishes the fire and reduces the chance of re-ignition.
Once the fire has been "blackened" and the hazardous and critical components have been cooled, the car is approached cautiously from an angle that offers the most amount of protection to the fire crew.
Once the vehicle is safe to approach, the overhaul process begins and the fire is verified to be extinguished.
